In Sanskrit, the second chakra is known as "Svadhisthana." meaning "dwelling place of the Self." It is from the second chakra that our sexuality, sensuality, emotion, creativity and passion flows ? as you can well imagine it is a deeply powerful and instinctual place in our energy, so much of our energy germinates in this chakra.
Ruled by the element of water, the second chakra governs all of the fluids in the body, the reproductive organs and the pelvic cradle/hips. More specifically organs/glands/parts of the body associated with this chakra are:
? Reproductive organs;
? All liquids in the body - the circulation of blood, urine, menstruation, tears;
? Hips, sacrum, low back; and
? Kidneys.
When the second chakra is balanced, our emotions flow easily like water, we are cool headed and vibrant at the same time. With a balance in the lower chakras, especially the root chakra and second chakra, we are connected to our creativity and focus.
When there is a deficiency in the second chakra some of the signs are:
? Fear of touch;
? Resistance to change;
? Disassociation with the Self
When there is a surplus or blockage in the second chakra some of the signs are:
? Sexual addiction or addiction to pleasure
? Poor boundaries or out of control behaviour
? Emotional outbursts or unpredictable dramatic behaviour
The second chakra is associated with the warmth of the colour orange, the fruit orange, all sweet tasting foods and liquids. "Svadhisthana" is associated with the sense of taste, especially sweet things!
In yoga practice, all forward bends and backbends (seated, standing and reclined) and squatting postures (prayer squat) strengthen and balance the second chakra.
If you decide to work with the second chakra in your yoga practice, only do so under the supervision of a qualified yoga therapist who is familiar with chakra balancing work, this is a powerful chakra that can stir up the pot, so it is important to have guidance.
